Crete in 7 days is enough to do the island properly: both coasts, both major cities, the south, and the one hike everyone asks about. This plan runs Heraklion for three days (the city, the south coast, and the east), relocates to Chania through Rethymno on day four, then spends the back half of the week on Chania's old town, the Samaria Gorge and a Balos finale. It is built from the same two-base logic as crete in 5 days, with the south coast and the gorge added back in. For shorter versions, see crete in 3 days and crete in 5 days; for everything else, the Crete, Greece travel guide.
Quick answer Three days Heraklion, relocate through Rethymno, three days Chania plus Samaria
Crete in 7 days splits into a Heraklion half (days one to three: Knossos and the museum, the south coast at Phaistos, Gortyn and Matala, then east to Spinalonga) and a Chania half (days five to seven: the old town, the Samaria Gorge, and Balos lagoon), with day four as the relocation through Rethymno. Ministry entry fees for the week total $89.92 (€80) per adult, Samaria adds $5.61 (€5), and Balos adds $44.90-$50.50 (€40-45). Two hotel bases split the week in half, three nights in each city, rather than one long booking or a different room every night.
Key takeaways
- Book Knossos for day one's first slot; it stays the busiest site on the whole trip even in a 7-day plan.
- Decide early whether you are self-organizing the Samaria Gorge or booking an all-inclusive day; the DIY bus-and-boat connection back to Chania is genuinely tight, covered under day six.
- The south-coast day pairs two Ministry sites with a beach at Matala, the one day of the week that is also simply an afternoon swim.
- Work out the full week's budget on crete costs and check your dates against best time to visit Crete, since Samaria's season runs 1 May-15 October only.
How A Full Week Is Built
Seven days is the first length where Crete's geography stops forcing hard trade-offs; this plan still uses two bases rather than one, but fits in the south coast and the gorge that shorter plans have to cut.
Two bases, three directions from the first
Heraklion anchors the first three days, with three different directions from it: the city itself on day one, south to Phaistos, Gortyn and Matala on day two, east to Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga on day three. Chania anchors the last three, old town, Samaria Gorge, Balos. Day four, the relocation through Rethymno, is the hinge, the same role it plays in the 5-day plan.
Why Samaria gets a dedicated day, not a half day
The Samaria Gorge hike itself is about 16 km, descending 1,227 m from the Xyloskalo trailhead to Agia Roumeli, with gates open 06:00-16:00. A realistic day for it starts before dawn in Chania and does not return until evening, which is why this plan gives it day six, with day five's lighter old-town walk beforehand and day seven's Balos boat as a gentler day after, rather than sandwiching the gorge between two other demanding days.
Best months for this full-week shape
This plan only works at all inside Samaria's 1 May-15 October season; outside that window, day six needs to be replaced entirely (see the plan-B table). Within the season, May and the second half of September into October are the strongest windows, cool enough for the gorge's full-day exertion and before or after the hardest heat makes the south-coast and relocation days uncomfortable. Full reasoning on best time to visit Crete.
One-way flights or a one-way car
As with the 5-day plan, flying into Heraklion and out of Chania, or the reverse, avoids backtracking. A one-way rental car works for the whole week; its drop fee is set by the individual company and not published officially, so confirm it directly. Crete car rental covers what else to check before signing.
What A Full Week Costs
Every Ministry price below is a fixed national rate; Samaria's fee is set by its own park authority; the Balos cruise and every tour price are operator and platform figures.
Seven sites and one hike carry a confirmed official price on this route.
| Site | Adult price | Reduced | Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knossos | $22.50 (€20) | $11.23 (€10) | Day 1 |
| Heraklion Archaeological Museum | $22.50 (€20) | $13.47 (€12), EU 65+, Nov-Mar | Day 1 |
| Phaistos | $16.84 (€15) | $8.98 (€8) | Day 2 |
| Gortyn | $11.23 (€10) | $5.61 (€5) | Day 2 |
| Matala Roman cemetery (caves) | $5.61 (€5) | $3.37 (€3) | Day 2 |

| Samaria Gorge | $5.61 (€5), free under 15 | n/a | Day 6 |
Our Sum For One Adult
Entry fees for all seven rows above total $106.69 (€95) by our sum. Add the Balos cruise's low-season adult price of $44.90 (€40) plus the Municipality of Kissamos's $1.12 (€1) admin fee on day seven, and the week's sightseeing-entry total reaches roughly $152.71 per adult, before transport, food and lodging. Packaged tours replace self-driving on the two longest days, the Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga day trip at $42.54 and the Matala, caves and Phaistos tour at $94.03, each already bundling transport.
The Samaria Transport Chain, Priced
Self-organizing Samaria means pricing three separate legs, none of which is bundled with the gorge entry itself. KTEL runs buses from Chania to Omalos/Xyloskalo at 05:00, 06:15, 07:45 and 08:45 daily per the printed timetable, though no fare is published for this specific route. The gorge entry is $5.61 (€5).
ANENDYK's boat from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion is $19.08 (€17) one way, $28.10 (€25) return. The KTEL bus from Chora Sfakion back to Chania is $10.21 (€9.10), about 1h40, but runs only three times a day, 08:15, 11:00 and 14:00. Our sum for the DIY chain, gorge entry plus the two transport legs, is $34.90 (€31) per adult, excluding the unpriced Chania-Omalos bus fare.
Why Most Hikers Book A Tour Instead
The three-times-a-day Chora Sfakion bus is the practical bottleneck. ANENDYK's own routes page states plainly that its Sfakia boat timetable is built to meet specific Chania-network buses and that the pairing is reconfirmed every season, not guaranteed year to year, and advises phoning KTEL Chania directly to confirm the connection before relying on it. A hiker who finishes the gorge later than planned, common on a hot day or with a group of mixed pace, risks missing the last 14:00 bus entirely.
This is exactly why an all-inclusive Samaria tour with ferry and entry, from $59.09, or a tour with a hiking guide, from $31.75, outsells the DIY route: the transport connections are the tour operator's problem, not yours.

Bus back to Chania
$10.21 (€9.10), about 1h40KTEL runs only three buses a day from Chora Sfakion to Chania, 08:15, 11:00 and 14:00; if the gorge and the boat ran late, the DIY chain can mean a long wait or an overnight in Chora Sfakion. This is the single biggest reason most hikers book an all-inclusive tour instead of piecing the day together themselves.
Day Seven: Balos And Gramvousa
A lighter recovery day after the gorge, a boat trip rather than another hike.
-

The Plan-B Variant: Outside Samaria's Season, Or Skipping It
Samaria only runs 1 May-15 October. Travelling outside that window, or simply preferring not to hike a full day, means day six needs a genuine replacement, not just a shorter version of the same plan.
| Situation | Replace day six with | Price basis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outside 1 May-15 Oct | Imbros Gorge, a shorter hike on the same mountain range | Entry fee not officially stated for Imbros | Travellers who still want a gorge, just not Samaria's length |
| Prefer not to hike a full day | Elafonisi as a second beach day | $30.56 listing from-price | Beach-first travellers |
| Want the gorge but fear the DIY timing | All-inclusive Samaria tour | $59.09 listing from-price, covers the full transport chain | Anyone uneasy about the three-buses-a-day connection on day six |
Imbros Gorge's own fee and hours were not found on an official source in our research, so treat any figure quoted elsewhere with the same caution this page applies to its own unconfirmed numbers. Figures current for Q4 2026.
Where To Sleep And Eat Across The Week
Two bases, split roughly in half: Heraklion for the first three nights, Chania for the last three.
A hotel inside or near Heraklion's historic centre serves days one through three, within reach of Knossos, the day trips' pickup points and the evening centre. A hotel inside or near Chania's old town serves days five through seven, close to the Samaria transport's departure point and the Balos pickup. Where to stay covers specific areas with an address for each.
- Heraklion nights (1-3): inside or near the historic centre, not a resort strip east toward Hersonissos
- Chania nights (5-7): inside or near the old town, walking distance from the Venetian harbour
- Book the Chania hotel with an early check-in or at least a luggage-storage option, since day four's relocation and day six's early Samaria start both benefit from not waiting on a room
Food across the week
No official restaurant-price source exists for any of the five towns this plan passes through, so this page prints no average meal figure, the gap covered honestly on crete costs. A walking food tasting tour in Chania on day five is worth considering specifically because it falls the day before Samaria, when a long, relaxed lunch matters more than it will the next two days.
What A Full Week Still Gets Wrong
Putting Samaria right after the relocation day
This plan deliberately puts a gentle Chania old-town day between the relocation and the gorge hike, day five, not day four. Hiking Samaria the morning after a drive and a hotel check-in, with no rest day between, is the single most common scheduling mistake on a 7-day Crete trip, by our reading of how this route is usually attempted.
Not confirming the Chora Sfakion bus connection
ANENDYK's own routes page states the Sfakia boat timetable is built to meet specific Chania-network buses and that the pairing is reconfirmed every season, not guaranteed. A DIY hiker who assumes the connection without checking risks the long wait described in day six. Confirm by phone with KTEL Chania before relying on it, or remove the uncertainty entirely with an all-inclusive tour.
Scheduling Balos for the morning after Samaria
This plan gives day six to Samaria and day seven to Balos, with a full night's sleep between a demanding hike and a boat day, rather than the reverse order, which would ask you to hike on tired legs the day after already being on your feet for ten-plus hours.
Booking the flight home too tight against day seven
The same logic as the 5-day plan applies here: a flight out of Chania on the evening of day seven leaves no buffer if the Balos boat runs late or weather intervenes. A morning departure on day eight, or at minimum a late, not mid-afternoon, flight is the safer call.
Packing one bag for two different climates
Chania's winter half of the year is noticeably wetter than Heraklion's, and even in the shoulder months a Chania afternoon turns faster. Pack a proper waterproof layer for the back half of the week specifically, and separately, lighter hiking-appropriate clothing and real trail shoes for day six, not the sandals that worked fine for the first three city-and-ruins days.
Money And Health Across The Week
Covered in full detail elsewhere on this site rather than repeated here.
Heraklion's two hospitals, PAGNI and Venizeleio-Pananeio, and Chania General Hospital "Agios Georgios" mean neither half of the week is far from emergency care; addresses and phone numbers are on is Crete safe. The climate resilience fee, charged per room per night March through October, applies at hotels in both cities, $1.68-$11.23 (€1.50-10) depending on star rating, covered on crete costs along with a full budget breakdown for a trip this length. Day six specifically is worth a word: carry cash for the ANENDYK boat and the KTEL bus back from Chora Sfakion, since a remote coastal village is not where you want to discover a card reader is down. 112 and 1571 work identically everywhere on the island, so the week's two-base structure changes nothing about which number to call.
Extending Or Trimming This Week
This plan already covers the full island's major sights, so a trip longer than 7 days is less about adding a missing region and more about slowing the existing pace down, an extra night in Chania before Samaria, or a second day at Balos or Elafonisi rather than one. Travellers with only 5 or 6 days should drop day two, the south coast, first, since Phaistos, Gortyn and Matala are the one full day of this plan that does not depend on the Chania half, and the shorter 5-day plan already shows what the week looks like without it. A Santorini day trip from Crete fits best as an eighth day bolted onto the end, from Heraklion, after flying back from Chania, rather than squeezed into the seven days above.
Whichever direction you adjust the week, keep the underlying two-base, one-relocation structure intact, since it is what keeps every version of this plan from turning into a string of long, sight-free driving days.
If It Rains, Or A Day Is Disrupted
Chania's wet season runs noticeably heavier than Heraklion's from October through March, so the back half of this week carries more weather risk than the front half; full figures on Crete weather. A rained-out day five in Chania loses little, since the old town's museums and covered market work indoors regardless. A storm severe enough to trigger a red-code alert on day six closes Samaria entirely, with no fixed reopening date; NECCA's live status page is the thing to check the morning of, not the forecast the week before.
If day six is cancelled outright, this plan's built-in slack is day seven, Balos can absorb a rescheduled Samaria attempt if your remaining days allow it, or Imbros Gorge substitutes on short notice without the same transport-chain complexity.
Car, Tour Or Bus Across The Whole Week
Seven days gives more room to mix transport modes than a shorter trip does, since no single day's choice locks in the rest of the week.
A single one-way rental
One car, picked up in Heraklion and dropped in Chania, covers every day except the Samaria hike itself, where the car sits unused in Chania while you take the gorge's own transport chain. The one-way drop fee is set by the rental company and not published officially, so confirm it before booking. This is the simplest option logistically, at the cost of paying for a car on the one day, day six, where it does nothing for you.
Tours for the long days, a shorter rental for the rest
An alternative many travellers on a full week use: packaged tours for the three days with the longest drives or the most complex logistics, the south coast, Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga, and Samaria Gorge, each of which includes pickup, with a rental car only for the days a car genuinely helps, the Heraklion city day, the Rethymno relocation, and the Chania old-town day where it sits parked anyway. This avoids paying for a car on day six specifically.
Public transport for the whole week
A confident independent traveller without a car can do nearly all of this plan by KTEL bus and the Samaria transport chain described above, accepting the DIY timing risk on day six. The one genuine gap is day three, since neither the Agios Nikolaos nor the Kissamos routes publish a fare, and day two's three-stop south-coast route is not well served by the limited Phaistos-bound departures. A car or a tour fills those two days even for an otherwise bus-only week.

Is 7 days enough for Crete?
Enough for both coasts, both main cities, the south, and the Samaria Gorge, which is the realistic ceiling for a first-time trip without living out of a suitcase every single night. Crete is large enough that a second week could still find new ground, but 7 days covers what most visitors actually come for.
How many days do you need for the Samaria Gorge alone?
One full day, start to finish, from before dawn to evening. This plan gives it day six specifically, with a rest day before it and a lighter boat day after, rather than treating it as something that fits around other plans the same day.
Should I book a Samaria Gorge tour or do it myself?
An all-inclusive tour removes the genuine risk in the DIY chain: the Chora Sfakion bus back to Chania runs only three times a day, and the connecting boat's own operator says the timetable depends on meeting those buses, reconfirmed each season. If that uncertainty bothers you, book the all-inclusive tour; if not, the DIY route costs roughly $34.90 (€31) in fares beyond the unpriced first bus. See the Samaria transport chain, priced.
What if my trip doesn't fall inside Samaria's season?
Replace day six with Imbros Gorge, a shorter hike on the same mountain range, or a second beach day at Elafonisi. See the plan-B table.
How much does a 7-day Crete trip cost in entry fees?
Our sum for every Ministry site plus Samaria is $106.69 (€95) per adult; adding the Balos cruise brings the week's sightseeing-entry total to roughly $152.71. Full breakdown in what a full week costs.
Can you do Crete in 7 days without a car?
Mostly yes, with packaged tours covering the three longest days (Phaistos/Gortyn/Matala, Agios Nikolaos/Spinalonga, and Samaria) and KTEL buses covering the Heraklion-Chania relocation. A car adds flexibility but is not strictly required for any single day on this plan.
What should I cut if I only have 5 or 6 days instead of 7?
Drop day two, the south coast at Phaistos, Gortyn and Matala, first. It is the one full day of this plan that does not connect to the Chania half, and the 5-day plan shows the route without it.
Is Crete or Santorini better for a first trip?
They answer different questions rather than competing directly: Crete is large enough for a full week of varied driving, hiking and beach days, Santorini is a compact, view-focused island best suited to two or three days. Many travellers combine both, Heraklion is the usual departure point for a Santorini day trip added onto the end of this plan.
What is Rick Steves' recommended itinerary for Crete?
Not stated by this page: no official or current Rick Steves-branded Crete itinerary was sourced in this research, so this page does not attribute a specific route to him. The plan above is built independently from Ministry of Culture prices, NECCA's own Samaria Gorge rules and this site's own tour catalogue, not from any guidebook author's personal recommendation.
