Hersonissos: The Old Harbour, the Strip and Where to Stay

Hersonissos is the package-resort town about 25 km east of Heraklion, built over the ancient Greco-Roman port of Chersonesos and now known as much for its nightlife strip as for its small working harbour. This page of our Crete, Greece travel guide covers what Hersonissos is actually like, which part of it to pick, the Blue Flag beach, and how the noisy centre compares with the quieter hillside villages stacked above it.

Quick answer Hersonissos in one minute

Hersonissos, also spelled Chersonissos, is a resort town on Crete's north coast about 25 km east of Heraklion, around 30 minutes by car or KTEL bus. The old harbour, Limenas Chersonisou, sits over the Roman-era port of Chersonesos and keeps a quieter, older feel, while the strip running inland from the beach is the busiest nightlife stretch on this coast from June to August. The town beach carries two Blue Flag awards for 2026. The hillside villages of Koutouloufari and Piskopiano give a calmer base a short walk above the same beach, and no official source publishes a nightly hotel rate for any part of the town.

Old Harbour, Strip or Hillside: Compared

Hersonissos is really four different addresses sharing one name. The table below compares them on noise, beach access and who each one suits, since no official source publishes a hotel rate for any of them.

The choice that actually changes the trip is not the hotel, it is which part of town the hotel sits in.

Six kilometres further east sits Malia, its own municipality with its own nightlife reputation and its own Minoan palace. It solves the same brief as the Hersonissos strip from a different postcode, so read that guide too before picking between them.

Hotel rates by area are not published by any official source we could check. The one official figure is the climate resilience fee, $1.68 to $11.23 (€1.50 to €10) a room per night from March to October depending on category, covered in full on Crete hotels. Figures current for Q4 2026.

What Hersonissos Is: From Roman Port to Package Resort

The name covers a working harbour, a Roman ruin, and a strip built from nothing in a few decades. All three are true at once.

The Ancient Port of Chersonesos

Hersonissos sits on the site of ancient Chersonesos, an important seaport from Classical Greece through Byzantine times that served the inland city of Lyttos, per the historical record. A pyramidal Roman fountain decorated with mosaics of fishing scenes still stands on the seafront street in the old harbour, the clearest piece of that history a visitor can see today without a ticket or a guide.

From Fishing Village to Package Resort

The modern resort grew from the small harbour now called Limenas Chersonisou, officially the Port of Hersonissos. Package tourism built the strip running inland from the beach from the 1970s onward, and the municipality today also takes in the beach communities of Malia and Stalida further east. Hersonissos is one name covering several different streets, and which one you book changes the trip more than the star rating does.

The Strip: Nightlife and Who It Actually Suits

The central strip is the reason Hersonissos shows up in both "best nightlife in Crete" lists and "where to avoid staying in Crete" searches. Both are about the same half-kilometre of road.

What's There

The strip, running inland from the beach through the centre of town, is the densest run of bars, clubs and English-menu tavernas on Crete's north coast. It fills from June to August and quiets down outside midsummer, by our observation of the seasonal pattern every north-coast resort follows.

Who It Suits, and Who Should Pick Elsewhere

Groups and younger travellers who want the walk from room to bar to be short get exactly that here. Families with young children, and anyone who wants to sleep with the window open, do better on the hillside in Koutouloufari or Piskopiano, or in the old harbour itself, both a short walk or drive from the same beach without the noise. The strip itself, not the town as a whole, is usually what people mean when they search for where to avoid staying in Crete.

Beaches In and Around Hersonissos

The town's main asset is the beach itself, and it carries an official quality mark two ways.

The Town Beach

The stretch of sand through Limenas Chersonisou carries two Blue Flag awards for 2026, listed on the programme's official Heraklion map as "Limenas Chersonisou 1 / AKASHA Beach Hotel & Golden Beach" and "Limenas Chersonisou 5 / Silva Beach Hotel", meeting the programme's water-quality and safety criteria for the year. Sunbeds and umbrellas line most of the central stretch in season.

Anissaras and the Quieter Coves

West of the harbour, Anissaras has its own small sandy cove with fewer sunbeds and no strip behind it, popular with families staying on that side of town. It is a short drive or bus ride from the harbour rather than a walk.

Family Attractions Beyond the Beach

Hersonissos built more than bars over the decades. A short walk or drive from any of the four areas above puts you at one of the island's handful of purpose-built family attractions.

Lychnostatis Open Air Museum

A small open-air folklore museum on the coast road just east of the harbour, rebuilding a cluster of traditional Cretan stone houses, a windmill and a herb garden to show pre-tourism island life. It is an easy half-morning stop and one of the few places in town that is not the beach or a bar.

Aquaworld, Labyrinth and Dinosauria

The town also carries Aquaworld, an aquarium and reptile rescue centre, the Labyrinth theme park, and the Dinosauria Park a short drive east in Gournes, all aimed squarely at families filling a rainy or over-hot afternoon. None publish an official ticket price on a page we could verify, so check the current rate locally or through the operator's own site before planning around one.

Crete's Only Golf Course

Hersonissos also hosts the only golf club on the island, inland from the resort strip. It is a niche reason to base here rather than Chania or Rethymno if golf is actually on the itinerary.

Eating in Hersonissos

Where you eat follows the same split as where you sleep. The harbour and the strip serve two different trips.

The Harbour Tavernas

Around Limenas Chersonisou, tavernas face the water and lean toward grilled fish, mezedes and the slower pace that comes with an older fishing village rather than a resort built for turnover. Prices are not published on an official page, so treat any figure you see quoted elsewhere as a snapshot, not a rate.

The Strip's International Menus

Inland, the strip runs heavily toward English breakfasts, pizza and cocktail bars aimed at a short-stay holiday crowd rather than a culinary one. It is efficient and loud rather than memorable, and most visitors who want a serious Cretan meal drive the 30 minutes into Heraklion or book one of the food-and-wine tours that start from the resorts, such as the olive oil, wine, cheese and honey tasting listed on our food page.

Getting There and Around

Hersonissos sits on the busiest bus corridor on the island, which makes it one of the easier Crete bases to reach without a car.

From Heraklion

KTEL Herakliou-Lasithiou runs the Heraklion to Malia and Hersonissos corridor roughly every 20 to 30 minutes most of the day, about 38 departures Monday to Saturday and about 35 on Sunday, per the operator's own timetable. The fare is not published on a public page, sold instead at the counter, by phone or in the operator's app.

Driving and Parking

The drive from Heraklion takes about 30 minutes on the New National Road, our estimate from the distance rather than a published time. No official source publishes a parking fee for Hersonissos itself, so treat any price you see locally as set on the day.

Timetable from ktelherlas.gr.

Where Hersonissos Fits for Day Trips

The town's real advantage is the map, not the strip. It sits closer to Knossos than Heraklion's own hotels do by road time, and the same corridor keeps running east.

West Toward Heraklion and Knossos

Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum sit about 30 minutes west by road, close enough for a half-day without an overnight move. A guided day trip from the east coast resorts covers both in one pickup.

East and Inland

The Cave of Zeus and the Lasithi Plateau sit roughly an hour east and inland, a mountain-ringed plateau reached on the same road that continues to Agios Nikolaos. Malia and its own Minoan palace sit a few minutes further along the coast.

Further West

Travellers based in Hersonissos who want a full change of scenery can also reach the west coast in a single long day. The Rethymno, Chania and Lake Kournas day trip samples all three in one pickup from the eastern resorts, a genuinely long day by road but a workable way to see the west without changing hotels.

A Day Around Hersonissos

One way to use a Hersonissos base well, whichever of the four areas you picked.

Morning: The Beach and the Harbour

Start on the Blue Flag beach before the midday sun gets heavy, then walk the harbour lanes at Limenas Chersonisou while they are still quiet. The Roman fountain and its mosaic are an easy five-minute stop on the same walk, and most tour buses have not arrived yet.

Midday: Lychnostatis or the Hillside

Lychnostatis Open Air Museum fills a shaded midday hour well, since much of it sits under trees and stone roofs rather than open sun. Alternatively, lunch up in Koutouloufari or Piskopiano trades the beach view for a cooler hillside breeze.

Evening: Strip or Harbour

The choice at night is the same choice as the choice of area: the strip for bars and late food, or the old harbour and the hillside villages for a slower dinner with the sea or the lights of the resort below. Both are a short walk or a cheap taxi from each other, so the evening does not have to commit the whole stay.

What Goes Wrong

A short list of the ways a Hersonissos booking disappoints, ahead of the trip rather than after checking in.

Booking the Strip by Mistake

Listings for the central strip and for the quieter old harbour or hillside villages can sit a very short walk apart on a map and read almost the same in a search result. If a quiet night matters, check the exact street name against the areas compared earlier on this page before booking, not just the general "Hersonissos" label.

Hersonissos vs Chersonissos vs Malia

The town's name is spelled both Hersonissos and Chersonissos interchangeably across maps, booking platforms and signage, and it sits close enough to Malia that some listings blur the two. Confirm the exact address rather than relying on the town name alone, especially if a specific stretch of beach is the reason for the booking.

Late Buses

KTEL's Heraklion to Hersonissos corridor is frequent during the day but thins out at night. A late return from Malia or Heraklion by bus is not guaranteed, so plan a taxi or confirm the last departure before relying on the bus for a late evening out.

The old harbour sits on the coast road between Heraklion and the eastern resorts, with Knossos a short drive inland and west.

Hersonissos Questions

Is Hersonissos worth visiting?

For a beach-first trip with nightlife on tap, yes. The town beach carries two Blue Flag awards for 2026 and the old harbour keeps a older, quieter feel over Roman-era ruins. If you want a quiet base, pick the harbour or the hillside villages rather than the central strip; compare the areas above.

Is Hersonissos a party town?

The central strip is, from June to August, with the densest run of bars and clubs on this coast. The old harbour, Anissaras and the hillside villages of Koutouloufari and Piskopiano sit a short walk or drive away and stay considerably quieter.

Where is Hersonissos in Crete?

On the north coast, about 25 km east of Heraklion and west of Agios Nikolaos, on the main coast road and the busiest KTEL bus corridor on the island.

Is Hersonissos a good base for families?

The hillside villages and Anissaras work well for families who want the beach without the strip's noise at night. The central strip itself suits groups more than young children.

How do you get from Heraklion to Hersonissos?

KTEL Herakliou-Lasithiou buses run the corridor roughly every 20 to 30 minutes most of the day. The fare is not published online, sold at the counter, by phone or in the app instead. By car the drive is about 30 minutes.

What is Hersonissos known for?

Its nightlife strip, its Blue Flag town beach, and the Roman-era harbour and mosaic fountain at Limenas Chersonisou, the original fishing village the modern resort grew from.

Is Hersonissos close to Malia?

Yes. Malia is about 6 km further east along the same coast road, close enough that many listings and tours treat the two as one stretch, though they are separate municipalities with their own town centres.

Does Hersonissos have an old town?

The old harbour, Limenas Chersonisou, is the closest thing to it: narrow lanes, the Roman-era fountain and mosaics, and a noticeably calmer feel than the resort strip inland.
