Crete beaches split cleanly by region and by what each one actually offers: a famous turquoise lagoon, a Blue Flag resort strip, a protected palm forest or a cove reached only on foot. This hub lines up the nine named beaches this site tracks in full, including 2026 Blue Flag status read directly from blueflag.gr's own municipality lists, part of our Crete, Greece travel guide. Every beach links to its own page for the full access route, and where a beach has no dedicated page, the nearest town page covers it instead.
Quick answer Nine beaches, Blue Flag status included
Crete's two most photographed beaches, Balos and Elafonisi, are both Natura 2000 protected sites with no Blue Flag award and no official entry fee. For a Blue Flag beach instead, Vai and Matala both carry the 2026 award, confirmed on blueflag.gr's own Sitia and Heraklion municipality lists. Seitan Limania and Preveli are the two quieter coves on this page, each reached by a narrower access route than the headline two.
Key takeaways
- Want the famous lagoon: Balos and Elafonisi top most "best beach in Crete" lists, neither Blue Flag, neither charging an official fee.
- Want a Blue Flag beach: Vai and Matala both carry the 2026 award.
- Planning a boat day: the Balos boat from Kissamos runs $44.90-$50.50 (€40-€45), separate from a $1.12 (€1) municipal fee.
- Base towns with their own Blue Flag beaches: Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Hersonissos and Plakias.

Why Balos and Elafonisi Carry No Blue Flag
Crete's two most-searched beaches are also the two with no award at all, and the reason is their protected status, not a lower standard.
Natura 2000 Status Rules Out the Infrastructure a Flag Needs
Balos and Gramvousa sit inside Natura 2000 site GR4340001 and Elafonisi inside GR4340002, both managed by NECCA's Western Crete unit, which bans permanent infrastructure and overnight stays. Blue Flag criteria assume a managed, serviced beach, a standard these two protected sites are not set up to meet, which is why neither appears on the Chania municipality's 2026 award list despite their popularity.
What a Blue Flag Actually Confirms
Vai and Matala's 2026 awards confirm water quality, safety provision and environmental management at a managed beach, a different kind of endorsement than fame or photogenic value. A beach without the flag is not necessarily lower quality; Balos and Elafonisi's absence from the list reflects their protected, unmanaged status more than anything about the water itself.
Getting to Each Region's Beaches
Access method is the real planning question for most of these nine beaches, more than distance alone.
Boat-Only and Rough-Road Access
Balos is reachable by boat from Kissamos or by a rough jeep track most rental agreements exclude from cover, which is why our Balos boat trip page focuses on the boat option. Seitan Limania requires a steep stepped path down the cliff face, with no vehicle access to the sand itself.
Paved Road, Longer Drive
Elafonisi and Falassarna both sit at the end of a long but fully paved drive from Chania, the kind of distance that makes a day tour a realistic alternative to self-driving. Preveli combines a short boat hop from Plakias with a signed walking path for those arriving by car instead.
Short and Simple
Matala and Vai are both straightforward drives with on-site parking, no boat or unpaved stretch involved, which makes either an easier add-on to a day already built around something else nearby.
Town Beaches With Multiple Blue Flag Awards
Four base towns on this site each carry several of their own Blue Flag beaches, separate from the nine named destinations above, and are worth checking directly if a resort-style beach day matters more than a famous lagoon.
Agios Nikolaos and Elounda
The 2026 Agios Nikolaos municipality list names three town beaches (St. Nicolas Bay, Minos Palace and Minos Beach) plus Kitroplateia, Ammos and Almyros. Elounda carries an even longer list: Porto Elounda, Elounda Blu, Elounda Mare, both Poros beaches and Pigaidakia Eloundas are all 2026 Blue Flag awardees, read on the Agios Nikolaos and Elounda pages.
Hersonissos
Hersonissos carries two separate 2026 Blue Flag listings along its strip, "Limenas Chersonisou 1" and "Limenas Chersonisou 5", both tied to specific beachfront hotels rather than one single town beach, covered on the Hersonissos page.
Plakias
Plakias appears twice on the 2026 Rethymno list, as both "Plakias" and "Plakias/Alegria Beach Resort", making it the south coast's best-flagged base town, covered on the Plakias page.
Which Beach Suits Which Kind of Day
Beyond region and Blue Flag status, the nine beaches on this page differ sharply in what kind of day they actually reward.
For Photographs
Balos and Elafonisi both reward an early arrival before the light flattens and the car park fills, since their turquoise-to-sand gradient is the whole point of the visit. Seitan Limania's narrow cove photographs best from the clifftop path above before the climb down.
For Families With Young Children
Matala and Vai both offer flat, easy parking-to-sand access without a boat or steep path involved, a meaningfully easier logistics chain than Balos's rough road or Seitan Limania's stepped descent.
For a Quiet Afternoon Away From Coach Groups
Preveli's river-mouth setting and Seitan Limania's narrow access both naturally limit numbers compared with Balos and Elafonisi, where coach tours arrive in volume through the morning.
Sand Type and Water Conditions
The nine beaches on this page differ noticeably in shoreline character, not just in region or Blue Flag status.
Lagoon-Style, Shallow Water
Balos and Elafonisi are both shallow lagoons rather than a single open shoreline, with water calm and warm enough for children to wade a long way out before it deepens, a direct result of the sandbar formations both sites are known for.
Open Coast and Deeper Water
Vai, Matala and Preveli sit on more open coastline with a quicker drop-off, a different swimming experience from the lagoons above and one worth knowing before bringing young children expecting Balos-style shallows.
Rock and Cliff-Framed Coves
Seitan Limania is the outlier: a narrow, cliff-walled cove with deeper water close to shore, better suited to swimmers comfortable without a gradual shallow entry.
Best Time of Day and Year for Each Beach
Timing changes the experience at these nine beaches more than almost any other single factor.
Balos and Elafonisi both reward arriving before 10:00, since coach parking fills by mid-morning in July and August and the shallow lagoon water can churn up once crowds wade in deep. Vai and Matala stay comfortable later into the afternoon given their more open layout and steadier parking turnover. Shoulder season, May, June and September, gives every beach on this page calmer water and thinner crowds than peak summer, covered in more depth on best time to visit Crete.
Facilities: What Each Beach Actually Has
Amenities vary sharply across these nine beaches, worth checking before assuming sunbeds or a snack bar will be there.
Balos, Elafonisi and Matala all have seasonal sunbed and umbrella concessions plus a basic snack option near the car park. Vai, with its palm forest setting, also runs a seasonal concession near the main parking area. Seitan Limania and Preveli both offer no facilities at all beyond what you carry in, consistent with their harder-to-reach, less developed access routes.

Which part of Crete has the best beaches?
Where to avoid in Crete?
This page does not cover that question directly; is Crete safe addresses safety specifically. For beaches, Balos's unpaved access road and Seitan Limania's steep path are the two physical cautions worth planning around.
Should I go to Crete or Santorini?
For beach variety specifically, Crete's nine tracked beaches span lagoons, palm forests and Blue Flag resort strips in a way a smaller island cannot match; our Crete or Santorini guide covers the wider comparison.
Which Greek island has the prettiest beach?
Balos lagoon and Elafonisi's pink-tinged sand are both regularly named among Greece's most photographed beaches, though neither carries an official Blue Flag award, covered above in why Balos and Elafonisi carry no Blue Flag.
Are Crete beaches free to enter?
Yes, every beach on this page is free to walk onto. Balos and Elafonisi both charge only for the boat or coach that gets you there, not for the sand itself.
Which Crete beaches are good for families?
Matala and Vai both offer easy parking and a short walk to the sand, better suited to younger children than Balos's rough access road or Seitan Limania's steep path down the cliff.
